Scream analysis

How can you see Scream is a horror film and how is suspense created in the opening sequence?

The first thing you see in the opening sequence is the phone ringing and a blond, young girl answers it. Automatically the low tunes voice on the phone creates suspense and makes the audience feel scared. The lighting at first is quite bright and gradually gets darker as the conversations between the girl and the man go on. the setting is dark with thunder and we see from a crane shot she's in an isolated area. This immediately reveals the genre of a horror film. A tracking shot following her around the house also shows she's alone. Therefore when the man says "I want to know who I'm looking at", a close up shot zooms onto her face to create suspense and to show she's scared. The high pitched, screechy music also starts at this point which throughout the opening sequence mimics the girls actions. Whenever the man says something else she finds scary a loud thump noise is heard to create tension and suspense. She also runs a lot throughout the house and whilst doing so the music speeds up to reflect her heart rate and her suspense. The props used signify that this film is going to be a horror film. The phone continuously ringing with the same man answering creates horror and suspense. The knife the girl takes out and plays with before stabbing it back (which makes a stabbing sound) indicates danger and possibly violence that will happen with that specific knife. The popcorn also getting louder and louder creates suspense as we know the longer its left on it will explode so tension is built up through that.
